Susanna and the Elders (plaque (flat object); Francis van Bossuit (Flemish, 1635 - 1692) (Flemish Artist); about 1690; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2011.12)
Note: This newly-discovered, superlatively carved ivory relief depicts the biblical subject of Susanna and the Elders, the story of a beautiful young wife who refuses to surrender to the lustful wishes of two men who come upon her bathing alone in her garden. Although intended as a story about a virtuous woman, the subject was popular with artists of the baroque period since it offered an acceptable pretext for depicting the nude female form. Carved from a single piece of ivory tusk, the relief demonstrates Bossuit's virtuosic skills at rendering soft youthful flesh in contrast to the emaciated features of the leering old men, and at evoking heavy cloth and delicate foliage in the waxy colored ivory.
