Making Fritters (drawing (visual work); Jean-Honoré Fragonard (French painter and draftsman, 1732...; ca. 1782; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 2012.4;)
Note: Throughout much of his career, Fragonard avidly depicted scenes of family life. In compositions filled with mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, servants, and pets, he almost invariably depicted families as happy, wholesome, and playful. Fragonard's many depictions of blissful family life are very much in the spirit of Jean Jacques Rousseau's strong advocation of the family as the bedrock of morality and of man's natural state. In this rollicking scene, a large family throbs with pleasure and anticipation as a woman (the mother?) leans over the fire, making beignets. No fewer than five babies struggle over, stare at, and steal the hot treats. Fragonard deftly uses the white of the paper to evoke the cozy light and heat of the fire as it illuminates the beignet maker's face and forefront. The only stable and patient presence is the little spaniel dog with its eyes trained on the cooking pan. The drawing owes much of its dynamism and pulsing sense of form to Fragonard's unique style of drawing, whereby he lays down a swift tangle of graphite lines followed by the dynamic application of gradations of loose brown wash. The wash often doesn't follow the graphite and allows it to show through, thereby creating two inter-connected layers of dynamic media.
