The Painter in His Studio (painting (visual work); Pietro Longhi (Italian painter and draftsman, 1701 - 1785) ; about 1741 - 1744; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2011.20)
Note: The composition depicts a painter, possibly the artist himself, at work on the oval portrait of a noblewoman on an easel. The sumptuously attired sitter is accompanied by her husband, or perhaps a protector or admirer, who appears considerably less alert and attentive to the proceedings than her small lapdog. Over this richly brocaded gold coat, the gentleman wears the traditional Venetian carnival costume known as the "bautta", consisting of a black tricorn hat, a mask (made of waxed white cloth) called the "volto", a veil, and a cloak. With intense concentration, the painter prepares to refine a passage under the left eye of the young lady's likeness. He clutches his palette and a mahlstick in his left hand. Scattered around the studio are the tools and accoutrements of his trade - a footstool with a bowl and rag for cleaning brushes, several glass flasks, an album, and a plaster cast of a head (perhaps after an ancient sculpture) sitting on a shelf in a niche at the back - as well as, less expectedly, a violoncello tucked into a corner of the room.
