Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino (painting (visual work); Joseph Mallord William Turner (English painter and draftsman...; 1839; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2011.6)
Note: A view made as if swooping from high in the air down upon the Campo Vaccino in the center of old Rome from the Capitoline Hill, Turner's Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino reveals the noblest ruins surrounding the ancient forum - from right to left, the Temple of Vespasian and Temple of Saturn, the Colosseum glowing in the distance, the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina and finally the Arch of Septimius Severus - as well as the still active churches of baroque Rome - Santa Francesca Romana with its tall, brick bell tower (a modern facade by Pietro da Cortona, 1640) and Santi Luca e Martina with its high dome - and the campo temporarily occupied with a group of contemporary women and their children and goats in the shadowed foreground and a gathering of monks in front of the church of Luca and Martina. Turner's painting revels in the crumbling remains of the ancient city, weeds invading the fallen marbles' interstices, its spoliated rebuilding in the 16th and 17th centuries, and its continued use in the present, a place at once pulsing with history and providing a setting for the daily activities of contemporary life. It is the fame and vitality of the famous city, literally glowing by the evanescent silvery light of an early-rising moon that Turner celebrates here. The obdurate building stone and pulsing flesh of the figures literally etherealized by Turner's extraordinary technical skill.
