The Temple of Hercules in Cori near Velletri (drawing (visual work); Jakob Philipp Hackert (German painter, 1737 - 1807) ; 1783; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2010.68)
Note: The drawing represents the temple of Hercules in Cori, thirty miles south east of Rome, not far from Albano. The place is known for this early Roman monument, which was erected by the consuls Marcus Manlius and Lucius Turpilius in the first decade of the first century BC. Giovanni Battista Piranesi had recognized the site's appeal on a visit to Cori just fourteen years earlier and made an etching of it in 1769. Here, Jakob Philip Hackert shows the pronaos, or entrance hall of the temple, which is supported by Doric columns; the entablature and the pediment are clearly depicted. Partly ruined, the structure is invaded by vegetation as nature reclaims its right. It is thus appropriate to term this an archaeological landscape. Right behind the temple is the campanile of the church of S. Pietro, which is now destroyed. The temple is flanked by buildings at either side. On the left, an elegant traveller steps out from behind an open door into a path that leads towards toward a green, hilly landscape in the distance. While the temple appears to be the main focus of the composition, the latter's strong diagonal character ultimately channels the gaze to the right, as if to invite the viewer to embark on a journey in the campagna.Using the gouache medium, Hackert achieves great formal clarity and precision. He depicts with almost tangible quality the temple's weathered surfaces and irregular walls, as well as the red tiles of the roof of the adjacent building. By contrast, other architectural parts, such as the temple's fluted columns, are described more summarily.
