View from Ariccia near Albano (drawing (visual work); Ernst Fries (German painter and engraver, 1801 - 1833) ; 1824; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2010.65)
Note: The drawing represents a view from Ariccia, near Lake Albano, looking West, with the Chigi Palace on the left and the Mediterranean far in the distance. The composition is almost entirely dominated by masses of trees, whose complex, dynamic forms Fries has rendered admirably with the graphite medium. The different degrees of finish, from the barely sketched out foreground to the highly-defined middle ground, contribute to give the sheet a haunting quality.
