Pan cuts the reed into which the nymph Syrinx has turned (drawing (visual work); Unknown maker, School of Fontainebleau (Artist); mid-16th century; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 2009.73)
Note: The drawing depicts an episode of Greek mythology related in Ovid's Metamorphoses (1:689-713). Pan, the god of woods and fields was pursuing a nymph of Arcadia named Syrinx when the two of them reached the river Ladon, which blocked her escape. To avoid the god's advances she turned into a reed. The sound of the wind blowing through the reeds pleased Pan so much that he cut some in order to make a set of pipes: this is precisely the moment that the artist chose to represent. The loves of Pan were often depicted during the French Renaissance. The subject not only satisfied the renewed interest in classical culture, but it offered artists rich pictorial opportunities.Tall reeds, which signify Syrinx's metamorphosis, form the central focus of the composition, thereby underscoring Pan's frustrated desire for the nymph. The reeds are rendered in an abstracted fashion, which contrasts with the rugged appearance of the tree trunk-in the right middleground- and its broken branches. Another satyr is asleep under the tree; he is leaning on the fantastical, bearded head of a river god. The reflection in the extreme foreground implies that the river Ladon is meant to have been right before the picture plane. A montainous landscape with buildings is visible in the distance.
