View from Civitella, near Olevano (drawing (visual work); Victor Paul Mohn (German painter and draftsman, 1842 - 1911)...; 1866; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.69)
Note: In 1866, Mohn together with Albert Venus and Carl Wilhelm Müller, who were his fellow students with Ludwig Richter at the Dresden Academy, went to Italy to draw the Roman campagna. This is a prime example of Mohn's Italian achievement. It shows a panoramic view over the campagna leading to the hilltop town of Olevano, beloved by the Nazarenes and the German artists who followed them. Mohn uses an intricate and beautiful manner of dense shading alternating with open, loosely drawn passages to create a space both vast but full of incident and detail. He gradates the thickness of the pencil from lively and expansive in the tendrils of the foreground plants to evanescent fineness in the most distant hilltops, including that of the hamlet of Olevano. He uses touches of black chalk in the foreground to make it pop, while seamless, soft graphite shading of the more distant hills creates a sense of sunlight and shadow playing across the landscape.
