View of the Valley of Trippstadt in the Pfalz (drawing (visual work); FerdinKobell (German, 1740 - 1799) (German Artist); 1770s or 1780s; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.67)
Note: The drawing represents a view of the valley of Trippstadt, a village near Kaiserslautern in the Pfalz region, in south western Germany. The composition was carefully framed so as to capture the picturesque character of the site. By adopting a vertical format and a low viewpoint, Kobell emphasized the majestic grandeur of a group of trees; he seems to have marvelled at their organic complexity, and also to have relished in describing the curious shapes of the rocks - overgrown by vegetation - lying beneath, which constitute the main focus of the image. Reflections indicate the presence of water in the foreground, presumably a river. Using the black chalk medium with great mastery, Kobell was able to suggest the variety of surfaces and textures of the different natural elements. It appears that View of the Valley of Trippstadt in the Pfalz was not preparatory to work in another medium; instead, it was meant as a finished work in its own right.Ferdinand Kobell was born in Mannheim in 1740, the eldest of five children (including his brother and fellow-artist Franz). He studied law at the University of Heidelberg, and then drawing at the Zeichnungsakademie under Peter Anton von Verschaffelt. In 1764 he was appointed painter to Prince Elector Carl Theodor. As part of a mission for the latter, Kobell went to Paris in 1768 and spent two years there training under the influential German draftsman and printmaker Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808). Wille's minute style is echoed in Ferdinand's View of the Valley of Trippstadt in the Pfalz. Throughout his life, Kobell found artitistic inspiration in the immediate vicinity of his native region. One of the last exponents of late Baroque landscape painting, Ferdinand Kobell believed that landscape should create an ideal image based on observation rather than merely providing a straightforward copy of nature. He found much inspiration in the compositions of Dutch artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682), Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) and Aert van der Neer (1603/4-1677). Goethe admired Kobell greatly: 'It seems to me impossible to push virtuosity further...'
