Austrian Peasants with a Horse and Cart, with a View of Vienna in the Distance (drawing (visual work); Johann Adam Klein (German, 1792 - 1875) (German Artist); 1816 - 1818; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 2009.66)
Note: The drawing combines the principal artistic interests of Johann Adam Klein: landscapes, particularly city views, and descriptions of horses either with Hussars or working peasants. Klein was so adept in his description of horses that his works became the principal collecting interest of Conrad Jahn, a contemporary of Klein's whose collection featured representations of animals and landscapes. Jahn, an early owner of the proposed drawing, amassed a large group of watercolors by Klein and even published a catalogue of these works during the artist's lifetime. With its wonderfully fresh watercolors, the proposed drawing reveals Klein's layered method of developing a composition. He probably made it during a stay in Austria in 1816-18. The spontaneous and energetic pencil-drawn lines, especially evident in the pentimenti around the feet of the conversing peasants help establish the placement of the central figures. The watercolors were then applied with varying degrees of density to provide bursts of local color-to wit, the red skirt of the female peasant at right-and to create a harmonious ground against which the horse and carriage could be set. With broad and rather diluted swaths of brown and blue, Klein defined the foreground and background, at the same time contrasting in technical terms the placid landscape elements from the more sharply described peasants, active in discussion as the cityscape in the distance and the earth below them remain static and cool. Klein trained in his youth in Nuremberg at the Städtische Zeichenschule under Gustav Philipp Zwinger. In 1805 he entered the studio of Ambrosius Gabler, who instructed him in printmaking techniques, which he gradually adopted for the creation of lithographs. In 1811, Klein settled in Vienna and found a home at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste. In 1815, he returned to Germany for sketching tours in the Rhine and Main valleys. Klein continued to alternate between Vienna and different cities in Germany until he settled in Munich at the end of the 1830s and remained there until his death in 1875. He was prolific as a draftsman, continuing to produce drawings into his old age.
