View of Benevento (drawing (visual work); Edmund Kanoldt (German, 1845 - 1904) (German Artist); 1874; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.63)
Note: Kanoldt studied with Friedrich Preller the Elder in Weimar before travelling to Italy in 1869. He remained there, mostly in Rome, until 1872, when he returned to Munich. Kanoldt returned to Italy in 1873, with the specific charge of creating a series of drawings for a lavishly illustrated and later famous volume, Italien: Eine Wanderung von den Alpen bis zum Aetna [Italy: A sojourn from the Alps to Aetna] which was published by Engelhorn in Stuttgart in 1876. The drawing was the modello for the print that appears on page 400 of this richly illustrated travelogue. It opens the chapter on Lucania, Apulia, and Calabria, the section in which the largest number of illustrations by Kanoldt are concentrated. In the drawing, two isolated figures walk into the foreground, away from the town of Benevento set behind them. Known in antiquity as Beneventum, Benevento lies on the river Calore, thirty miles northeast of Naples. As Kanoldt's inscription indicates, the artist visited the city in 1874, most likely as part of a larger drawing tour through Italy. His view of the city-drawn at some distance along the river banks-records the mountains and trees of the natural landscape that surrounds the relatively small buildings of the city's center. Excepting the steady movement of the travelers at left, a sense of stillness pervades the composition, reinforced by the controlled use of pencil throughout. Regular horizontal shading, applied with alternating degrees of density, creates a sense of variation in how the sun exposes different surfaces of the landscape. Kanoldt indicates passages of intense local color by applying heavy pressure in the act of drawing specific elements such as the trees along the river banks. The light and seemingly blended passages in the background impart an ethereal quality to the form of the mountains that hover as if weightless over the townscape below.
