Wooded River Landscape in the Alps (drawing (visual work); Thomas Ender (Austrian, 1793 - 1875) ; about 1850 - 1870; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 2009.60)
Note: Thomas Ender was among the most talented and historically significant watercolor draftsmen of the nineteenth-century Germanic tradition. Ender studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, where he began his career-long interest in recording landscape, particularly in the medium of watercolor. In 1817 he joined the Austrian scientific mission on a visit to Brazil, where he produced hundreds of watercolors and drawings of local flora and fauna. Upon his return to Europe the following year, Ender travelled to Italy before returning to permanently to Vienna. He served as a professor of landscape painting at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna from 1836 until 1851. The drawing demonstrates with astonishing brilliance the breadth of Ender's technical capabilities in the watercolor medium. At once clear and precise in the description of the rocks and flowing river water at the composition's center, the proposed drawing also exhibits Ender's inclination toward abstraction, a tendency that developed in the later phases of his career. Moving from central focal point to the perimeter of the composition, Ender's application of watercolor becomes more loose and brushy. This combination of fine, controlled, and clearly descriptive passages with those more suggestive, broad, and free in character comport perfectly with the subject described-a bend in the river around an outcropping of rock encircled by rocks and firs with the shadow of the mountain range cast in the distance.
