Village Path with Church Spire in the Distance (drawing (visual work); Guillam Dubois (Dutch, 1623/1625 ? - 1680) (Dutch Artist); about 1650; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.59)
Note: The drawing is one of very few surviving sheets by Guillam Dubois that can be connected to a published painting (previously in the Goudstikker collection). Sketchy and replete with jagged lines, it is characteristic of Dubois's drawing style and can be compared to a group of drawings executed in pen and gray ink over black chalk in the years 1648-1655. Often connected with the famous landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael, Guillam Dubois made important contributions to what has been recognized as a shift in Dutch landscape painting from the more romantic and idealized to a description of nature rooted in first-hand observation. Dubois emerged from the Haarlem school of landscape painters, printmakers, and draftsmen that included Esias van de Velde, Hercules Segers, and Jan van Goyen. Unlike other Dutch landscape artists, who turned to Italy for inspiration in creating warm light effects, artists like Dubois chose to focus on the natural environment of northern Europe. Dubois is known to have travelled to Germany, where he expanded his repertoire of dunes, woods, fields, and trees to include in his compositions. As scholar Jeroen Giltaij has described, the drawing is characteristic of a third phase in Dubois's development as a draftsman. More open and sketchy in the handling of the chalk, the sheet is further elaborated with the use of gray wash. Unlike the earliest of Dubois's drawings, the proposed sheet imparts a general, not precise, description of the shrubs, trees, and turf that comprise the view set forth by the artist. A strong sense of movement permeates the scene-both the movement of the trees' branches and leaves as well as the implied movement of a traveler through space from foreground to background. The narrowing path at the drawing's far right margin helps establish the counterpoint to the church steeple in the left background, the presumed destination poetically set among brambles and treetops by Dubois's lightly applied chalk lines.
