Saint Cecilia (drawing (visual work); Joseph Anton Draeger (German, 1794 - 1833) (Artist); 1822; J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, Calif...; 2009.40)
Note: This finely wrought drawing describes Saint Cecilia, patron saint of art and music, while she sings and plays the organ, the instrument commonly pictured as her attribute. Preparatory for a painting commissioned by Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia (then crown prince) now in a municipal collection in Bad Homburg, with a cartoon in a private collection in Munich, the drawing displays careful consideration of the composition's details, including the notes of the music score, the ornate tracery of the organ's interior, and even the saint's eyelashes. Draeger completed this drawing in Rome, where he joined with other artists of German origin in the Ponte Molle society to study the art of Italy and pursue a relatively monastic life dominated by art, fellowship, and introspection.A student of Gerhard von Kügelgen from 1818-1820 and before that time in training at the Dresden Akademie, Draeger travelled to Rome in 1821, where he eventually died in 1833. His patron Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia was a pre-eminent supporter of the arts, commissioning from architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel some of the earliest buildings on Berlin's Museum Island. Draeger's paintings and drawings are preserved today in collections in Hannover, Copenhagen, Munich, and Trier.
