Vase (vase; Jean-Désiré Ringel d'Illzach (French medalist and scul...; 1889; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2010.2; )
Note: This astonishing monumental bronze vase is made up of four separately cast sections which are bolted together. It measures nearly nine feet from the circular molded socle to the handles' highest extremity. Twelve panels form the ovoid body of the vase, and each panel is framed by tapered moldings resembling Art Nouveau furniture fittings. A classical foliate border decorates the "shoulder" of the vase, and the tall narrow neck is encircled by cast bronze peacock feathers. In turn, these are held in place by intertwined bronze straps forming a guilloche pattern which rises in rhythmic flame-like peaks to form a stiff ruff. Fluted lengths of bronze are twisted into volute-like handles that curve above the upper rim of the vase. At the base of each handle is a mask, supported by hippocamps, with beaked animals forming a pair of horns above each mask. The panels of the vase's body teem with applied life-casts of spiders, a branch of juniper, bay leaves, lace and other scraps of fabric, string and ribbons, as well as areas of smeared wax, all of which have been perfectly replicated in the metal. Bats, stars, half moons and unidentifiable ghostly shapes appear to hover over the surfaces. Snails creep over the molded socle. This fantastical and nightmarish imagery shares qualities with the paintings and sculptures of Symbolist artists and writers working in Paris and Brussels at the end of the 19th century.
