View of Dresden (drawing (visual work); Christian Gottlieb Hammer (German, 1779 - 1864) (German Arti...; 1810; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.32)
Note: The drawing shows in grand scale an astonishingly detailed and colorful view of Dresden seen from a position down river, or northwest, of the city's historic core. The more fluid application of gouache, watercolor, and ink seen in the description of the sky and in the figures in the foreground at right contrast with the minute precision used to define the windows, cupolas, and spires of the city's architectural monuments. The drawing served as a preparatory model for a hand-colored print of similar dimensions that was published by Rittners Kunsthandlung. Rittners published several such views designed by Hammer including those of Meissen and St. Petersburg in addition to this one of Dresden. Hammer was active not only as a draftsman, but also as a printmaker; these artistic roles were often combined as Hammer produced many of the prints based on his drawn designs. Christian Gottlieb Hammer was born and trained in Dresden, where he studied under Johann Philipp Veith before eventually becoming a professor of the Dresden Art Academy. He remained throughout his life and career a citizen of Dresden, and the most complete collections of his drawings and prints can still be found in that city.
