Spring Has Arrived (drawing (visual work); Ludwig Richter (German, 1803 - 1884) (German Artist); 1870; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.31)
Note: This highly finished watercolor celebrates the arrival of Spring. It shows the burgeoning young life of springtime evidenced by children, lambs, ducklings and birds in a scintillating natural setting. The fading of winter is symbolized by the elderly crone seated, cloaked in brown, withdrawn in reading, and partially turned away. The drawing is rendered with exquisite sensitivity seen in the faces of the figures and in the wealth of detail.
