View of the Residence of Archduke Johann in Gastein Hot Springs (drawing (visual work); Thomas Ender (Austrian, 1793 - 1875) (Austrian Artist); about 1829 - 1832; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.30)
Note: Thomas Ender played a large role in the Austrian/Viennese cultural Renaissance that took place after the defeat of Napoleon, finding his first important patron in Prince Metternich, the architect of the peace. He studied at the Akademie der bildenen Künste in Vienna, where he rejected classicism and specialized in watercolor landscapes done after nature. Through Metternich he was appointed artist to the Austrian scientific mission that left for Brazil in 1817 under imperial support, with his vast body of documentary watercolors housed today in the Akademie in Vienna. In 1829 he became the special painter to Archduke Johann, brother of the Emperor, who employed him for much of the rest of his career. Johann was a naturalist, scientist, and reformer, and commissioned Ender to make watercolors of the spectacular topography of the Austrian Alps. These watercolors are remarkable for their grasp of the sublime geological forces at work in the Alpine environment. The work here displays Ender's remarkably fine and delicate watercolor technique to the fullest. It shows the relatively humble residence of the Archduke in the resort of Bad Gastein near Salzburg. Ender made many watercolors in and around Bad Gastein during his first years in the Archduke's employ. The atmosphere has the golden glow of sunshine as it illuminates the distant peaks and the fenced fields in the middle distance. Ender orchestrates a command of vast spatial expanse combined with effects of minute diminution, as seen in the tiny figures on the bridge in the distance. Ender's spectacular Alpine views such as this one helped create a sense of Austrian identity in the post Napoleonic period. This was apparently kept in an album with other views as indicated by the inscriptions and numberings on the verso.
