View of Koblenz with the Rhine and Fortress Ehrenbreitstein (recto); View of the Heidelberg Castle (verso) (drawing (visual work); Johann Adam Klein (German, 1792 - 1875) (German Artist); 1815; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.28)
Note: The recto of the drawing shows a distant view of Koblenz on one side of the Rhine and the Fortress Eihrenbreitstein on the other. The verso of the same sheet, likely taken from a sketchbook, depicts Heidelberg castle seen from a relatively short distance. Both sides of this sheet demonstrate the artist's careful and at times blended application of graphite. The recto provides insight into how Klein integrated his preliminary graphite sketch with the subsequently applied brown ink, used to strengthen distinctive features of the landscape and the architecture it contains. While the recto of the sheet reveals Klein's use of the reserve-the upper and lower registers are almost totally absent of line-the verso demonstrates the artist's contrary impulse to fill the sheet from lower to upper margin with details from the architecture he observed. Consistent with the Romantic and historicizing approach to the Germanic past operative at that time, Klein recorded accretions of architectural detail, from Romanesque to High Gothic to Renaissance as they unfold in the ruins of this famous and venerated castle. In short, the two sides of this drawing, both of which can be seen in the same orientation if the sheet were to be exhibited double-sided, reveal Klein's consonant yet varied approach to landscape-austere, restrained, ethereal in one instance and elaborate, thorough, and immediate in another. Klein trained in his youth in Nuremberg at the Städtische Zeichenschule under Gustav Philipp Zwinger. In 1805 he entered the studio of Ambrosius Gabler, who instructed him in printmaking techniques, which he gradually adopted for the creation of lithographs. In 1811, Klein settled in Vienna and found a home at the Akademie der bildenden Künste. In 1815, he returned to Germany for sketching tours in the Rhine and Main valleys; it was in fact during one of these trips that he created the proposed sheet. Klein continued to alternate between Vienna and different cities in Germany until he settled in Munich at the end of the 1830s and remained there until his death in 1875. He was prolific as a draftsman, continuing to produce drawings into his old age.
