Joseph Wintergerst in a Floor-length Coat, Standing, with his Hands Placed on Top of one another (drawing (visual work); Wilhelm von Schadow (German, 1788 - 1862) (German Artist); about 1811 - 1813; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.9)
Note: Among the most intimate works connected to the artistic fraternity of the Nazarenes, the proposed drawing shows one of the group's members, Joseph Wintergerst, wearing the floor-length coat in which many of them posed for each other's drawing sessions. Wintergerst communed with the Nazarenes or Lukasbrüder, as they also called themselves, between 1811 and 1813. The coat he wears-a sort of talisman and emblem for the fraternity-appears in drawings produced by Peter von Cornelius, Johann Friedrich Overbeck, and Franz Pforr.A combination of portrait sketch and costume study, the proposed drawing shows Schadow's concentrated attention to the features of Wintergerst's face and his careful description of the weight and volume of the coat Wintergerst wears. This figure study was also later adapted by Schadow for an Entombment in the Roman church of S. Andrea delle Fratte. It is partly on the basis of this connection that nineteenth-century scholar Dr. Norbert Suhr was able to attribute the proposed drawing to Schadow; it had previously been given to Overbeck. The son of Berlin-based sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow, Wilhelm von Schadow studied at the Berlin Academy under the direction of Friedrich Georg Weitsch. In 1810 Schadow traveled with his brother Ridolfo to Rome, where he stayed in the company of the Nazarenes considerably longer than Wintergerst, returning to Germany in 1819 and eventually becoming director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Unlike some other Nazarenes, Schadow excelled in the portrait genre and devoted himself to its production. When compared to similar drawings produced by the Nazarenes, the proposed drawing demonstrates Schadow's interest in portraiture, which is most keenly evident in the evocation of Wintergerst's mental acuity. The directed and rather intense gaze Wintergerst casts activates his facial features as it channels the power of the coat he wears.
