Landscape with Abraham and the Three Angels in the Valley of Mambre (drawing (visual work); Joseph Anton Koch (Austrian, 1768 - 1839) (Austrian Artist); 1797; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.8)
Note: Under the branches of a majestic oak tree, the Hebrew patriarch Abraham kneels as he recognizes the three angels who miraculously appeared to him in Canaan. Abraham's wife Sarah observes from the door of their humble dwelling while camels and sheep graze in the distance and shepherds tend to their flock. In the biblical passage (Genesis 18: 1-19), Abraham washes the feet of his visitors and offers them food. The angels then announce that the elderly couple will soon give birth to a son. Koch chooses to feature the narrative moment of the angels' apparition, and in his rendering he includes some standard iconographic references such as Abraham's flowing robes and long beard. Unlike previous artists such as Rembrandt, whose primary interest focused on the interaction of Abraham and his visitors, Koch selected this biblical scene to evoke a golden age of antiquity. The survival of the awesome oak in the center foreground emphasizes the eternal resonance of nature's grace and grandeur. As he also explored in similar drawings and paintings, Koch described the ancient biblical time of Abraham in the proposed drawing as a verdant and sweeping landscape, one truly consonent with the subject's theme of hospitality.
