Two Female Figures in Half-length and a Study of a Hand (drawing (visual work); Friedrich Preller (German painter and printmaker, 1804 - 187...; 1861; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.22)
Note: The proposed drawing provides a moving insight into the drawing practice of the important German nineteenth-century artist Friedrich Preller. As his monogram testifies, Preller completed this drawing in Rome at the age of fifty-seven. The drawing shows a female figure in two different postures, seen in both cases in profile from her right-hand side. In between these passages of the sheet, the artist has developed his study of the model's right hand in greater detail. The progression from left to right of a description of the model in one posture to an anatomical detail to a description of the model in a new posture reveals the kind of drawing exercise that Preller depended on for the maintainence of his art. The drawing demonstrates Preller's light and fine handling of chalk and his propensity for clear and reinforced contour lines. As a friend and contemporary of Joseph Anton Koch, Preller represents an important figure in the development of German Romanticism.
