Fourteen Scenes Related to the Tale of Tom Thumb (drawing (visual work); Oswald Adalbert Sickert (British, 1828 - 1885) (British Arti...; about 1851; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.21)
Note: The proposed donation shows a series of illustrations related to the story of Tom Thumb. This diminutive nursery tale character, popular throughout Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, was made especially relevant in nineteenth-century Germany by the publication of Ludwig Bechstein's illustrated fables, which included "Der kleine Daumling." Sickert contributed a number of designs for the broadside series Münchner Bilderbogen, a series of often humerous prints that were published by Braun and Schneider starting in 1841. The print based on the present drawing, "Der kleine Däumerling" (Tom Thumb) appeared in volume 3 of the Bilderbogen series in 1851 as number 64. The proposed donation shows how Sickert anticipated the engraver's method in his controlled, linear manner of rendering each distinct scene. At the same time Sickert also used the opportunity to explore different narrative episodes for illustration; of the fourteen scenes that he represented only twelve were adapted for reproduction in print form. In short, this drawing is not only an amusing representation of a figure from popular nineteenth-century literature but it also gives an insight into how draftsmen worked in collaboration with printmakers and print publishers.
