Note: Jacob van Strij received his early artistic training in Dordrecht from his father, a painter of houses and decorative interiors, before he studied history painting in Antwerp. Van Strij is most well known for his pastoral landscapes in the style of the Dordrecht-native Golden Age painter Albert Cuyp (1620-1691). In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Cuyp's paintings and drawings were highly sought after both at home and abroad. Artists like van Strij capitalized on Cuyp's popularity, and the proposed sheet exemplifies the type of work that made van Strij famous. Here van Strij used Cuyp's compositional devices-contrasting rustic cottages and trees in the left foreground with a broad river landscape in the distance. Van Strij's composition is also populated by Cuyp's favorite protagonists-clusters of cows and sheep, an elegant man on horseback gesticulating with his riding crop, and a group of peasants. Using only a monochrome palette, van Strij created charming effects of golden dappled light, so typical of Cuyp, most visible on the rustic gate.
