Note: Made on an unusually large scale, this is a spectacular example of a highly-finished watercolor created as a work of art in its own right. In a wide format reminiscent of a panorama, the artist has depicted Saint Mark's Basin, Venice in a view extending from Santa Maria della Salute on the left to the Riva degli Schiavoni on the right. James Holland went to Venice on numerous occasions throughout his career, first in 1835, and even four times between 1860 and 1865 alone. The present watercolor would have derived from on-the-spot sketches made by the artist in the Public Gardens, and was exhibited at the Society of Painters in Water-Colour, London in 1862. Venetian subjects were extremely popular at the time, and this scene not only includes the famous landmarks of the city, but also a prominent trading vessel heading to the East, and others preparing to make sail.
