Allegory of Painting and Drawing (drawing (visual work); Gerard van Nijmegen (Dutch, 1735 - 1808) (Dutch Artist); 1801; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2008.31)
Note: The proposed sheet is a charming bucolic depiction of a shepherd couple resting on a wall in a wooded forest. According to the artist's inscription on the verso, the shepherdess, refrained from speaking by a cloth tied around her mouth, represents the silent art of painting. She crowns her male counterpart the discoverer of Drawing. To clarify his allegory, van Nijmegen placed the attributes of Painting, brushes and a palette, beside the shepherdess and hung beneath them is a drawing of a female bust. Typical of van Nijmegen, the high-minded allegory is full of charming rustic details found in his cabinet paintings of woodland views-a rushing waterfall, watchful dog, craggy branches, and sleeping sheep. The scene is made all the more picturesque by van Nijmegen's dappled light effects created by delicate application of grey washes. The inscription on wall, Teekeningen van Verscheiden Meesters, indicates the function of the proposed sheet: it was designed as a title page for an album that held drawings by various masters. In the 18th century, Dutch collectors typically organized their drawings thematically, storing them loosely in large, tooled leather albums. Van Nijmegen, who was an amateur artist and passionate connoisseur of drawings himself, designed several title pages for such albums. Others can be found in the Collection Frits Lugt, Paris and the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam. According to J.W. Niemeijer, Director Emeritus of the Rijksprentenkabinet and specialist on 18th century Dutch drawings, the proposed title page was probably made for the Rotterdam Drawings Society, Hierdoor tot Hooger (Through this still Higher), of which van Nijmegen was a member. This elite association of men of leisure held evening gatherings to discuss their collections and enjoy a shared enthusiasm for papier kunst.
