A Mother Showing Her Weeping Son His Shoe of Switches (drawing (visual work); Cornelis Troost (Dutch, 1696 - 1750) (Dutch Artist); mid-18th century; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2008.33)
Note: Called "the Dutch Hogarth," Cornelis Troost was the most important Dutch artist of the 18th century, and is well-known for his work as a draftsman and for his grand-manner portraits and satirical paintings. In this delightful genre scene, Troost depicts a displeased young boy on the morning of the feast of Saint Nicholas, who, having left his shoe by the fireplace for Sinterklaas, only received switches instead of gifts and candy. The mother of the naughty boy looks knowingly down at her son and offers him instead a plate of pretzels. The subject is based on a painting by the Dutch master Jan Steen (1626 - 1679) in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, in which a family celebrates the feast of Saint Nicholas and some children receive gifts and sweets while a young boy on the left cries at his lack of presents. This drawing, probably done at the request of a collector, was likely executed after a lost painting by Troost, known to us today from a print engraved by Jacob Houbraken. By the 18th century, it was standard practice to produce prints in the same direction as paintings, suggesting that the present sheet is a copy after the painting and not the print. We know that on other occasions, Troost excerpted scenes from his most popular compositions for sale to collectors, such as the case of his drawing of a Drummer Boy, made by the artist after his multi-figured pastel of the Children's Festival. Troost received a large number of commissions during his lifetime and even made multiple copies of his paintings; two versions of The Feast of Saint Nicholas were known to have existed.
