| A Winter Scene with Two Gentlemen Playing Colf (drawing (visual work); Hendrick Avercamp (Dutch, 1585 - 1634) (Dutch Artist); about 1615 - 1620; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2008.13) | |
| Note: This lively drawing depicts a variety of figures enjoying the winter landscape, including two men playing kolf in the foreground, watched by a male observer. Kolf, a traditional Dutch sport that is a cross between golf and ice hockey, appears in many of Avercamp's winter scenes. In the background, other figures ice skate, sledge, and converse against a pale gray winter sky and a landscape dotted with frozen boats, barren trees, and a lone windmill. Avercamp includes charming vignettes, including a young boy on a sled, a couple skating together, a horse-drawn sled, and several figures that slipped and fell on the ice - all figures that consistently reappear in Avercamp's paintings. This scene is an exceptional example of the type of winter landscape popularized by Avercamp and highly sought-after by collectors in seventeenth-century Holland. Winter scenes with ice skaters would have reminded seventeenth-century audiences of the saying "de slibberachtigheyt van 's menschen leven" (the slipperiness of human life), and the addition of a faintly visible gallows in the right distance of this drawing, as is common with Avercamp's winter landscapes, suggests that Avercamp's light-hearted genre scenes are also a reminder of the frivolousness of life. | |
