Christ in Majesty (sculpture (visual works); Unknown maker, Limoges School (Artist); probably 1188; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2007.6)
Note: This impressive figure of Christ was made from a single sheet of copper worked in repoussé, with the addition of engraving and mercury gliding. The crowned Christ is seated, blessing with His right hand and holding the Bible in His left hand. His down-turned feet rest on a small rectangular plaque with a pattern of foliate vine ornament in champlevé enamel. The dominant color of the enamel is blue; smaller areas are in white, turquoise, green, red and dark blue enamel. He wears an undergarment, a tunic and a mantle, which is draped over His left shoulder and across His lap. The borders of the tunic and the book cover are decorated with cabochons, table-cut gems and are engraved with circle, quatrilobe and crosshatched decoration. The crown, partly destroyed, also had cabochons inserts, which are now lost. His eyes are inset pearls of dark blue, certainly made from glass. The face has delicately chiseled features and is framed with long hair, which is finely engraved, as is his short beard. The figure of Christ would have been surrounded by a mandorla and the symbols of the four Evangelists, according to the iconographical program of the Maiestas Domini, or Christ in Majesty. The motif has a long tradition in Christian art, and has been executed in various media; the oldest example is the apse mosaic in Santa Pudenziana, Rome, dating to the beginning of the fifth century. During the Romanesque period the Christ in Majesty motif appears in many tympana reliefs throughout France, as well as on enameled altar frontals and relic caskets of the Limoges workshop.
