Louveciennes, Route de Saint-Germain (drawing (visual work); Camille Pissarro (French, 1830 - 1903) (French Artist); 1871; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2007.1)
Note: As inscribed at lower left, the drawing shows the road to the town of Saint-Germain-en-Laye from Louveciennes, the village outside Paris to which the artist returned from England in June 1871. Pissarro had initially moved to Louveciennes from Pontoise in 1869 in order to work closely with the rising stars of landscape painting who were living and painting there: Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Auguste Renoir. Pissarro first indicated the main features of the composition using black chalk: the road curving into the middle distance, the almost bare trees lining the road, and the buildings set along the horizon to the right. He then fleshed out the composition by covering the entire paper surface with watercolor, using his chalk underdrawing as a guide. Pissarro used a muted palette of blacks, browns, greens and blues in combination with a wet, fluid technique to capture the sense of fall turning to winter in this landscape. By sweeping a very wet brush in broad strokes, sometimes with a minimal amount of pigment (as to suggest the blustery sky) Pissarro experimented with some of the spontaneous effects of watercolor, allowing it to pool and tide in some areas and to be evenly applied in others to create a diffuse light. Pissarro used smaller strokes with more pigment on the brush to articulate the foliage, both on and fallen from the trees, and the figure and carriage traveling along the road.
