Note: A huntsman, brilliantly garbed in a scarlet cloak and mounted on a gray horse, refreshes himself in the company of two men and a serving woman in the rustic courtyard of an inn in the vicinity of Rome. While his horse relieves itself and several hounds loll in the shadows, the group engages in animated conversation. The prize of the chase, a hind, lies in the right foreground. On the balcony above, a washerwoman sets out laundry to dry near a group of flower pots and planters. Warm sunlight illuminates the crumbling upper reaches of the towering ruin behind the inn, as well as the four tiny figures exploring it, and provides dappled shade for the two men and a woman seated at the bottom of the stairs.
