Ivory Goblet (goblet; Balthasar Griessmann (German, 1620 - 1706) (German Artist); about 1680; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2006.26)
Note: Balthasar Griessmann's ivory Goblet is a masterpiece by one of the foremost ivory carvers of the Baroque Age. It is also the largest among his known goblets. It significantly enriches our knowledge of Griessmann as an artist, and of 17th-century European small-scale sculpture in general. Its iconography, which involves ancient mythology, means it could bridge the collections displayed at the Getty Center and at the Villa. Also, it has a high potential for interpretation in the context of early modern European history and the history of collecting, while the multitude of exquisitely sculpted figures and its festive subject will interest a wide range of viewers.
