The Calydonian Boar Hunt (oil painting (visual work); Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577 - 1640) (Flemish Artist); about 1611 - 1612; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2006.4)
Note: The hunt of the fearsome Calydonian boar, set loose to wreak havoc on the land of King Oeneus of Calydon by the aggrieved goddess Diana, is told at length by Ovid (Metamorphoses, VI11, 270-419), Philostratus the Younger (Imagines 15), and Homer (Iliad, IX, 529-52). When the king failed to honor the goddess with offerings, she let loose a boar of terrifying size and ferocity. The king's son, Meleager, assembled a formidable group of famous Greek warriors to slay the beast. Several of the huntsmen were killed and maimed before Meleager slew the boar and presented its head as a trophy to his beloved, the virgin huntress Atalanta.Rubens portrayed the climactic instant of the tale when Meleager, brow drawn in concentration, delivers the mortal thrust of the spear into the shoulder of the boar, which has turned to face him. Atalanta, who stands behind Meleager, has already drawn first blood with her arrow, which has lodged above the creature's eye, and reaches for another bolt. Beneath its feet lies the disemboweled carcass of a hound, and the prostrate corpse of Ancaeus, who was eviscerated by the boar after boasting he could kill the monster at close range. To the right and immediately behind the boar, the famous horsemen, Castor and Pollux (the Dioscuri), rein in their mounts, spears poised. Several other huntsmen surround Meleager on foot, one blows a horn and dogs surge forward to attack the beast.
