Note: From a vantage point in the middle of the Grand Canal, just before it intersects with the Cannaregio waterway, a delicate and complex panorama emerges, bathed in a luminous morning haze. The Palazzo Bembo rises at left - its owners and the probable patrons of the picture appear on the upper balcony - and the two tones of the structure mark the recently-completed addition to the Renaissance palace. The middle ground features houses of various important Venetian families, gracefully tinted in muted shades of white, rose, and peach. The Palazzo Querini stands at the right edge of the canvas, and just beyond it is the church of San Geremia, in the midst of its mid-century renovation. As the channel recedes in evanescent atmospheric perspective, other important buildings punctuate the waterfront, most notably the stern, grey-brown, late-seventeenth-century Palazzo Flangini and the richly articulated Baroque façade of Santa Maria di Nazareth. Gentle reflections of the buildings appear in the placid water, while vertical pilings and masts pierce the air in a lively contrapuntal pattern. Gondolas skim the canals, along with two larger boats, the one at center laden with cargo, and both with sails furled.
