Belisarius (painting (visual work); Baron François-Pascal-Simon Gérard (French, born Italy...; 1797; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2005.10; )
Note: Belisarius, unjustly disgraced and blinded, wanders on a dirt path along a dangerous precipice. The aged general carries his young guide, bitten by a serpent that dangles limply from his bleeding leg. In contrast to the boy's feminized, enervated body, the muscular form of Belisarius, seen from below, rises heroically against the spectacular, atmospheric sunset, his sculptural monumentality creating a powerful outline against the sky. The remote landscape and twilight sky emphasizes the isolation of the general and his page and the injustice of their fate.
