Stonehenge - Twilight (painting (visual work); William Turner of Oxford (British, 1789 - 1862) (British Art...; about 1840; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2004.80)
Note: The watercolor shows a golden sunset over Salisbury Plain, with Stonehenge silhouetted on the horizon. Cart tracks criss-cross the lower half of the composition, and a flock of sheep descends a slope to drink at a pool. The sheet dates to the latter part of the artist's career, and shows his absolute command of the use of watercolor in the creation of atmospheric effects and sentiment.
