Grotto of Sarrazine near Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne (painting (visual work); Gustave Courbet (French, 1819 - 1877) (French Artist); about 1864; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2004.47)
Note: This small, powerful painting represents a close-up view of Sarrazine grotto, a geological site and tourist attraction in Courbet's native region, the Franche-Comté (between Besançon and Geneva). Courbet explores and describes the craggy, elemental, time worn surfaces of the grotto, which is situated near the Lison, a tributary of the Loue river. The innovative composition envelops the viewer as the cave recedes deep into space and its walls extend far beyond the picture's edges. The black void and concentric arcs that form the curving walls and ceiling pull the viewer in to this vortex-like composition. Using his palette knife, Courbet creates a painterly mosaic consisting of chalky whites, earthy browns, pellucid blues, lichenous and mossy greens. A delicate wooden scaffold limns the back right wall, suggesting the human presence. Along the small stream of water, two large boulders propose a resting place. While the grotto motif is unusual in French landscape painting, caves, rivers, and related natual phenomena were central to Courbet's practice in the 1860s.
