Faun and His Family with a Slain Lion, A (painting (visual work); Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, 1472 - 1553) (German Artist...; about 1526; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2003.100)
Note: A family of fauns is gathered in a forest clearing. Their finely rendered, luminous bodies contrast with the dense screen of foliage that both isolates and protects them from civilization, which appears in the distant landscape in the form of buildings on a rocky outcropping and a delicately painted city. A dead lion lies in the foreground in front of a hewn stone on which a faun sits holding a rod or club in his hand. Only the small detail of his pointed ears indicates that he is not human. He gazes at his female companion, who stands gracefully holding one child and leading another by the hand. The sensitive treatment throughout, from the lion's calligraphic hair and the figures' fluid contours to the dappled foliage and soft landscape, imparts a sense of union most manifest in the relationship of the figures and expressed in the baby's tender gesture toward the faun.
