The Vision of Saint Francis of Paola (painting (visual work); Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (Spanish painter, 1617 - 1682) ...; about 1670; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2003.144;)
Note: The painting shows the heavenly vision of Saint Francis of Paola (1416-1507), founder of the Order of Minims, an order characterized by its severity and humility. Saint Francis experiences a vision in which the word "CHARITAS" (the motto of the Minims) appears in an aureole of golden light accompanied by cherubs. In the background, the saint stands on the shore with two kneeling companions, referring to a miracle in which Saint Francis ferried the two men across the Straits of Messina on his cloak after being refused transport on a ship. The subject of the painting is, however, not simply the visionary and narrative elements, but the presentation of faith in the example of Saint Francis of Paola, in rapt attention before the heavenly host and its message of "charity." An old, bearded Saint Francis of Paola, humbly dressed and bearing the weight of his calling on a slender walking staff, glances heavenward with a look of reverent awe and dutiful acceptance. The simplicity of setting, sober tonality, loose brushwork, and harmony of both material and divine presence, are all consistent with Murillo's late style and help to palpably convey a scene of passionate spiritual appeal.
