Note: The drawing is a modello for the large altarpiece of the same subject in the transept of Saint Michael's Church, Munich. It shows a cardinal, bishop, pope (possibly Gregory XIII), and nobles, including Wilhelm V standing on either side of the altar, on top of which is a monstrance holding the host. Depicted above the altar in the heavenly realm, the Virgin Mary with the Christ child, the Dove of the Holy Spirit, and God the Father, are presented one above the other. Surrounding the divine trio are angels bearing the symbols of the Passion. Like the rest of the decoration of St. Michael's church, the drawing celebrates the dukes of the Wittelsbach dynasty's support of Jesuit ideology.
