Note: A still life of great subtlety and complexity unfolds on a simple stone tabletop. An untouched roundel of soft cheese rests atop a bed of straw at center. Behind it stands a metal charger holding two cruets, one filled with red vinegar, the other with greenish-yellow oil. To their right, Chardin has placed two gougères (cheese pastries) and three ceramic pots covered in cheesecloth, while on the left appear beets, spring onions, greens and parsnips - with their root tendrils cascading over the ledge. Two mackerels hang from hooks above, the scales of one fish reflecting the strong light coming from the left, leaving the other shrouded in shadow.
