The Convalescent (painting (visual work); Edgar Degas (French painter, 1834 - 1917); about 1872 - January 1887; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2002.57)
Note: Degas depicts an unidentified woman (perhaps one of his New Orleans cousins) in a state of physical and emotional lassitude. The pose, notably the tilted head supported by the back of her left hand, invokes traditional representations of melancholy. The woman's unfocused gaze, red-rimmed eyes and affectless facial expression, coupled with the limp right arm hanging at her side, further suggest illness, enervation or sadness. Indeed, the descriptive titles applied during Degas's lifetime, "La Malade" or "La Convalescente," inflect our understanding of the picture.
