A Wooded Landscape with Travelers on a Path Through a Hamlet (painting (visual work); Abraham Storck (Dutch, 1644 - 1708) (Dutch Artist); Meindert...; about 1665; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2002.17)
Note: A broad, rutted tract and a narrower, elevated path wind through a wooded dune landscape interspersed with rosy brick cottages and gray wood barns toward a distant clearing. Warm sunlight, dispersed by cumulus clouds and the shaggy canopies of vigorous oak trees, animates the features of the rolling terrain, casting the powerful forms of the blasted stump and fallen logs in the foreground into shadow and illuminating crisp, bright foliage, sandy clearings and woody copses. Hobbema's textured impasto touches and liquid delineating brushstrokes, all visible in the magnificent foreground tree, for example, impart a delightful sensation of energy and motion throughout the landscape. A considerable number of denizens and travelers, playful dogs and lumbering farm animals (for the most part the work of Abraham Storck) populate the scene.
