Note: This work exemplifies the extraordinary freshness and precision that characterizes Bidauld's best small-scale work. He orchestrates an effusive play of silvery morning light over a serene, bucolic landscape that shelters a villa and aquaduct in its luxuriant verdure. Organizing his composition through a gentle modulation of hue (from soft blues and greens to autumnal yellows and browns) and careful arrangement of planes, Bidauld manages to convey the immediacy of his impressions before nature as well as evoke the classical landscape tradition embodied in the work of such 17th-century French masters as Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin.
