A Hare in the Forest (painting (visual work); Hans Hoffmann (German, about 1530 - 1591/1592) (German Artis...; about 1585; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2001.12)
Note: In a verdant clearing at the edge of a pine forest, an alert hare tranquilly samples a leaf from a nearby stand of Lady's Mantle. Based on one of Dürer's most famous and influential watercolor nature studies, "The Hare" (1502; Vienna, Graphische Sammlung Albertina), Hoffmann's meticulously rendered creature dwells amidst the wondrous diversity of nature, depicted from various aspects at every stage of life. Numerous insects, small reptiles and a robin animate the scene, for all of which Hoffmann has scrupulously observed thier details. As a highly inventive evolution of the single-subject nature study into a narrative genre, Hoffman's "Hare in the Forest" is, in effect, the hare Dürer never painted.
