Note: Emerging from deep shadows behind a table, a philosopher stands gravely before us in crude, tattered garb. With blackened, grimy fingers, he holds open a well-worn book, on whose pages can be made out various geometric figures and pseudo-Greek characters. A strong, focused light harshly picks out the details of the man's face: From the small, blunted nose, heavy cheeks, and unkempt beard to the distinctive creases of his tall brow and the irregular folds of the lids above his dar, penetrating eyes. Subtly modulated shadow suggests the surface of his skull, while white highlights create an uncanny sense of greasy, perspiring skin.
