Statuette of a Bull (statuette (figurine); Unknown Roman (Roman Artist); 100 BCE - CE 79; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa (Malibu, Los Angeles...; 2001.7)
Note: The statuette is of a bull standing solidly on three legs with his left front hoof raised. His head is lifted and turned slightly to the left. Details of the anatomy and musculature are naturalistically modeled. For example, the dewlap is rendered in a series of pliant folds, the horns curve forward above the projecting ears, the eyes bulge and have incised pupils, irises and lashes. The nostrils in the square snout are carved indentations and the poll is a mass of thick, curling locks. The tail curls back onto the right flank of the beast with the tassel of the tail resting against it. The powerful animal is anatomically correct with testicles and incised ridges of sagging flesh framing the underbelly. The bull was found in the ruins of Pompeii sometime between 1780 and 1790. It was most likely made as a votive offering, perhaps to Jupiter, and probably stood in a household shrine (lararium).
