Christ on the Cross (painting (visual work); El Greco (Domenico Theotocopuli) (Greek, 1541 - 1614) (Greek...; 1600 - 1610; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2000.40)
Note: As the principal visual focus of Christian contemplation, the image of Christ on the cross has taken many forms. These range from full, epic depictions of the crucifixion story to the simple and familiar crucifix. In this painting, El Greco combines the iconic power of the crucifix with the expressive power of landscape painting. He sets the cross atop Golgotha, the "place of the skull," with Jerusalem looming in the background, yet eliminates other characters from the narrative to encourage direct empathy between the viewer and Christ. Light flickers across his undulating form. Storm clouds mass around the figure, which is echoed in dramatic flashes of light playing through the sky. The figure and landscape swell toward an emotional crescendo as Christ lifts his head and eyes heavenward. Here, El Greco appeals to the emotions of the viewer with an expression of the greatest pathos, seemingly beyond suffering. The artist almost surely meant to evoke Christ's final moment, when he commends his spirit to God.El Greco and his shop rather consistently produced an accurate superscription proclaiming "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" in Hebrew, Greek and Latin, as prescribed in John 19:19-20. The significance of the horse and rider with a standard in the distance is unknown, even though it is repeated in most versions of this composition.
