Note: An elegant woman is captured in profile, as she strides alongside a street pavement holding an umbrella. She wears a long coat trimmed with fur, and a veiled, brimmed hat. Through a combination of variegated densities of medium, Seurat turns a puzzle of simple, flat forms into a living vibration of light and texture. The thick velvety outline of her curvilinear profile contrast for instance with the lighter, feathery application of crayon in the background. While almost no light traverses the columnar silhouette at center, the fibrous paper filters through web-like veins on the surrounding wall.
