Dancing Faun (sculpture (visual works); Giovanni Battista Foggini (Italian, 1652 - 1725) (Italian Ar...; about 1700; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2000.8)
Note: This bronze statuette represents a dancing faun, a popular subject in antiquity and in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Romans identified the faun with Pan, the Greek god of woods, fields, flocks, and herds. Able to charm nymphs with his music, he personifies Lust in Renaissance allegories. As in the present work, the faun is usually depicted as having a goat-like face with pointed ears, a tail, and horns, characteristics that derived from his association with Bacchus, the Greek god of wine and revelry. In antiquity, the faun was also often portrayed as a handsome youth snapping his fingers or clapping cymbals to the music of a syrinx (reed pipes arranged in a row of ascending length) or playing a scabellum (foot organ) as in this bronze.
